News Sources

With the decline of the main stream media it is becoming difficult to find news on what is happening in the city and neighborhood. The Washington Post, NBC, CBS, Fox and ABC are concerned only with scandal, crime and traffic – and even that coverage is rather spotty. The only saving grace of the mainstream are a few good op-ed writers like Tom Sherwood and Eugene Robinson. (And the Washington Post Weekend Going Out Guide on Friday - the most comprehensive listing of what's on in theater, music, museums, etc. Far better than say Washingtonian.) This page attempts to inventory available local news sources.

The Current is a free weekly that is delivered to most neighborhood front doors Wednesday evening. Local news on the arts, building and zoning issues, etc. It is delivered free to every house and many apartment buildings (some building prevent delivery) in ZIP codes 20008, 20016, 20007, 20015, 20011 & 12 west of Georgia Ave, 20036, 20009-southern half generally south of Euclid, and a few drops in other downtown area zips. If you live in the service area but are not receiving the paper, phone 202-244-7223 or e-mail current@currentnewspapers.com. You can also read on line at http://www.currentnewspapers.com/archive.php

Great Greater Washington http://greatergreaterwashington.org/ is a highly professional blog that concentrates on transportation matters.

Borderstan http://www.borderstan.com/ has news for Logan, Dupont and adjacent areas.

The Intowner http://www.intowner.com/ is a monthly free newspaper with NW DC news. Good at covering development issues, art exhibits, and food. It is no longer available in hard copy, but you can download it in PDF or read it online.

Washington City Paper http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/ is a weekly concentrating on entertainment, offering probably the most comprehensive listing of events – not just music and clubs but plays and galleries. It also has some really serious indepth investigative reporting in many issues – something rare in the DC press these days. Published weekly on Thursday, but getting difficult to find in hard copy as they cut back printing expenses. I usually get one now at a box by the U Street Metro west entrance, or on P Street. And follow it on line.

District Line Daily is a daily e-mail aggregation - links to stories about DC in many different publications. It augments the Loose Lips column. To subscribe, go to http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/, scroll down to near the bottom of the front page, and enter your e-mail address in the "subscribe to District Line Daily" box.

Streets of Washington http://www.streetsofwashington.com is a blog devoted to DC history on the street scale. Lots of interesting tidbits and old photos.

The Mail themail@dcwatch.com is a mostly daily news/opinion e–mail published by two DC activitists. Good way to keep up with games at the Wilson Building – our city hall. Send e–mail to subscribe.

Washington Examiner http://washingtonexaminer.com/local has a Glenn Beck editorial policy, but they do have some actual reporters covering DC. Interesting local stories now and then.

Our Advisory Neighborhood Council (ANC) considers alcohol and zoning exception requests. By getting on the mailing list for their agenda you can keep up with what´s happening that may impact you. You may even see something you want to comment on – say a business across the alley requesting a 3 am liquor license with live entertainment. Go to http://www.dupontcircleanc.net/ and subscribe to their newsletter.

Alert DC https://textalert.ema.dc.gov/ is a method for District emergency management types to communicate with the public. E–mail or text alerts on your smart phone usually deal with roads being or utility outages.

Dupont Forum is a Dupont Circle area Yahoo list with sometimes interesting news.

MPD–3D is a Yahoo mail list (or Yahoo Group) that three times a day (once on weekends) provides the police blotter – significant items reported to the police.

U Street News is a Yahoo with items of interest to our much–revived stretch of U Street NW.
